The internal dilemma for most, checkered floors. To take the risk or remain neutral is the question at hand. The reality is that checkered floors are neutral! Shocking to believe, I know. Nazeli Design is here to help you feel comfortable with the idea of taking this route rather than a more traditional route.

A lot of people have this grand idea when renovating that checkered floors will be such a good idea (which it is). After some time however they get nervous and decide to go with a “safer” route. We think people are intimidated by it. You might think it’s hard to work around when it comes to decorating or picking out other finishes and materials but that is not it at all. If anything, it almost makes it easier because you have such a good base to start with that you don’t have to go above and beyond for other things in that area.

Most people only consider the usual style of black and white checkered floors. You don’t have to follow any of those rules, gray and white, pink and white, different stone mixes, the possibilities are endless. They aren't sure whether they want to use actual marble or porcelain tile. There is also ceramic and even limestone. They also aren't too sure how much of a space they should proceed with whether it's your entire entry way or an inset into the floor of your laundry room. Installation is also something to consider, you have to keep in mind that it will be a bit more costly and installation is very tedious compared to traditional flooring. Going with a size of 12x12” is a safe bet for most spaces, no matter how big or small the space. If it is a smaller space you can play with the scale, going with smaller tiles might make it feel busier and distracting but make sure you get samples of your options and test it out!

If you feel like you can’t figure out where to incorporate this pattern you can do a snippet of your entryway, powder room, inset in your kitchen, your entire primary bathroom, office, or even your laundry room like we mentioned earlier. All in all, don’t be afraid to do something others might stray away from. Get out of your comfort zone and you'll be amazed at how beautiful you can transform your space. Some of the most beautiful palaces in the world consist of checkered floors. And most importantly, listen to your designer the first time they tell you it's a good idea!
